Ready your budget as we list down 5 Homegrown Brands that
you never knew you needed! These brands will absolutely inspire you and make
you more proud to be Pinoy!
- Happy Skin
To all the beauty junkees who don’t want to compromise their
skin over a makeup, this local beauty product is perfect to add in your kit!
Happy Skin is a homegrown makeup
brand managed by Jacqe Yuengtian-Gutierrez together with Rissa Mananquil-Trillo
created to make women (and their skin) happy and well-cared for. True to its
tagline, “makeup that cares for your
skin” Happy Skin provides high quality makeup that’s skin-friendly and easy-to-use,
empowering women with confidence and effortless beauty.
Being in the beauty and personal care industry for nearly
a decade, Jacqe is a firm believer in good skincare and doesn’t like
compromising her skin because of the makeup that she use and I bet all other
women out there stand with the same standard as hers. Rissa likewise said that she has always dreamed to “create the perfect makeup line that would
wonderfully celebrate Filipina skin”. As a model and a beauty columnist, it
is important that she held same standard for the products she endorse and
recommend and Happy Skin is genuinely something she believed in and will use.
Since its launch in 2013, Happy Skin has been the country’s favorite homegrown brand of makeup and has bagged beauty awards in the Philippines’ top fashion and beauty glossies. If you’re thinking of buying one or two of their products (I know you are!), don’t worry because Happy Skin got everything that you need to achieve that Kilay on fleek & perfect pouty lips! Oh, did I mention that they also partnered with your favorite local artists and Disney Princess, too? And when you thought we ran out of things to love about Happy Skin, look at these products and see how girly and cute they are! So…are you impressed? Because we sure are! But if these products are still not enough, you can check their website at http://www.happyskincosmetics.com/. Support local and celebrate your Filipina Beauty!

- Linya-Linya
Any girl would love a guy with a great
sense of humor (I know I do!) I mean,
who doesn’t consider a guy who’s fun to be with and can easily make you laugh,
right? With all his witty puns and comebacks, you would really fall in love! But
what I think is more exciting is that you can have these lines printed in your
shirt and wear it anytime you like. Take note, it’s not your ordinary statement
shirt.
Long-time college friends Ali Sangalang and Panch Alvarez,
started fueling their dreams during their college days on a lined blank
notebook where Ali wrote his one-liners and Panch matched it with his doodles. Trying
to fight off daily feels and frustration from work, these two sat down one
afternoon in a local restaurant to sort things out in 2012. They shared their
works online and it didn’t take long until their Linyas were turned into shirts and other products.

Linya
Linya is
a collection of doodled puns, catchphrases and misquotations that reflect the feels of today’s Filipinos. It was
inspired on what these two usually write at the back of their notebook when they
were too lazy to listen to the discussion of their professor. What made this
local brand click to the market is
the fact that Filipinos can easily relate on what is printed in the shirt. It’s
like your shirt is speaking for yourself.
Next time you go to the mall, make sure
to visit their store! But if you’re too busy to do that, you can check their
online shop at http://linya-linya.myshopify.com/ and find variety of products you will certainly love
(I heard they’re having a promo once in a while; you don’t want to miss that!)
Now tell me…who would not fall in love with these guys??? I mean shirts! I see
what I did there. Haha! Well you can’t
deny Filipinos are great with words huh *wink*.
- Akaba Ltd. Design Co.
It is not just a bag! This local brand tells everyone a story
though their bags – a story of Pinoy collaboration, craftsmanship and culture.
The whole project was only intended to fulfill the final
requirement of the three Management majors. But, because of unwavering support
that the brand has gained over the years, the team decided to continue and grow
the brand even after graduation. Because of their dedication and passion, these
young entrepreneurs were able to support and help different indigenous groups
in the Ilocos region revive their almost-forgotten weaving art technique.

In collaboration with GKnomics, one of the entrepreneurship programs of Gawad Kalinga, the team used P150,000 worth of capital from the organization’s investor to launch its own online store and participated in different business competitions to gain additional funding. Speaking of online store, you can order at https://akaba.co/shop/products!
Probably now that you see their products, there’s a
certain brand in your mind that looks quite the same with these and yes, you
are right! AKABA wants to give the Canadian apparel Hershel Supply Company a
run for its money. Just recently, this brand has gained itself investors from
Singapore and Indonesia. Isn’t that amazing?
A Filipino product is actually making its way internationally and keeping pace
with international brands? This brand serves as an inspiration and a reminder
to all the Filipino youth that if these young entrepreneurs can do it, so can
you!
- Kawayan PH
Just by hearing its name, you can
actually tell that this brand is a certified local. This homegrown brand has
changed the game for fashionable timepiece for their unique concept of
producing a watch made of bamboo. Truly
Pinoy’s best!
Kawayan PH provides eco-friendly, durable and affordable wooden products. Aside from their bestselling kawayan watches, their products range from wooden mobile castings to wooden sunglasses. That’s some kind of relief to Mother Nature! What I like more about their products is that it doesn’t only come in a wooden color but it has variety of designs that can perfectly match all occasions!
These watches are not only perfect for occasion but it also
make great couple watches! It’s already 2017 and you’re still thinking of
buying matching Casio watches? Why not buy unique but classic (and local!)
timepieces instead? In that case you can help our fellow Filipino, save the
environment and spend less amount of money. It’s a win-win situation! Now go
tell this to your partner and thank me later.
And if you’re asking who is the “bloody” brilliant people
behind this brand… let me introduce you to *cue music* Rex Alfred Layos, the man
who conceptualized the Kawayan Watch. Of course, behind this successful
time-oriented businessman is a woman named Angelie Ortega. These two are a couple and a business associates. Now that’s #RelationshipGoals! They got the
idea when they were strolling through a mall in Singapore in 2015 and saw the
store with a wooden theme, which included bamboo. They imported materials,
looked for watchmen to do those things and the rest is history. At present,
these two are hoping to open a store anytime soon. But for the meantime, you
can order online at https://www.facebook.com/kawayan.ph/!
- Renegade Folk
When we
were in Elementary, we were taught that Marikina is the “Shoe Capital of the
Philippines” and even until now that many things have already changed,
Marikina-made shoes still give satisfaction and happiness to whoever uses it as
their footwear. So if you want a style
that is so laid back, fun, and still sophisticated, then this footwear is what
you’re looking for!
I know Janice, I feel that too! Renegade Folk is your go-to leather sandals that will perfectly match your OOTD on Monday or your favorite dress on Sunday. It is a young Filipino brand designed and handcrafted by local artisans. Their styles are so simple but very elegant, perfect for everyday wear.
It was in 2007 when Tina Sambalido
and her sisters’ love of shoes turned into a business idea. Who would have
thought that by not having their perfect pair of shoes as they were shopping
around the city would give birth to Renegade
Folk? I mean, that is truly a blessing in disguise! But like any other
young businesses, there were struggles at first. According to Tina, it wasn’t
easy because the customers can’t trust them; they decided to close the shop but
what surprised them is the overwhelming messages from people
who loved their shoes. For her, that was the turning point.
who loved their shoes. For her, that was the turning point.
RF encourages individuals to make their mark, embrace their
individuality, and #OwnYourStep! You can order online at https://www.renegadefolk.com/.
So that’s
the 5 homegrown brands that’s absolutely #MadeInThePhilippines! Just like these
people, you can have your own business without you expecting for it! Whether
you’re walking down the street or even if you’re not paying attention to your
professor, you’ll never know when opportunity comes so keep your eyes open and
