5 Must See in the the theatres this 2017

With Talents like Lea Salonga and Rachelle Ann Go, there is no doubt that something about Filipinos connects with the Arts. Theatre in the Philippine scene is flourishing and not a lot of people are aware of it. Being a theatre geek myself I was surprised at the talent and quality at which Filipinos produce theatre and though it isn’t for everyone, it does however provide an experience that heightens the reality we live in and at the same time helps us connect with the purest of emotions and helps us better understand our reality.  It is truly something worth our appreciation and everyone should at least try.

And with that, we I present to you the most exciting upcoming productions early 2017 has to offer.

1.       Noli Me Tangere the Opera

Based on Jose Rizal’s renowned novel the opera premiered in the Far Eastern University in 1957 and had its CCP debut in 1987. This new production will mark the opera’s 60th anniversary with a limited engagement at CCP’s TanghalangNicanorAbelardo from January 28 to February 3, 2017.

2. Sa Wakas

Based on the songs  of the Philippine RockbandSugarfree this homegrown musical tells the timeless story of heartbreak and relationships falling apart. What makes it unique is how this story is told, in a reverse chronological order (kind of like The Last Five Years but just Cathy’s side). This combination of pop rock and theatre started in 2013 at the PETA theatre center but now has moved to the Power Mac Center Spotlight beginning January 12, 2017 until February 5, 2017.

3. Care Divas

One of the first Philippine musicals I ever saw Care Divas tells the story of five transgender Oversea Filipino Workers in Israel who work as caretakers by day and as drag performers by night. This play has won many awards including  Outstanding Stage Direction, Outstanding Musical Direction, Outstanding Musical Production and Outstanding Ensemble Performance for a Musical from the 2011 PhilstageGawadBuhay! Awards. It runs from  February 3, 2017 until March 19, 2017, (Tuesday-Sunday, 3:00p.m. and 8:00 p.m) at the PETA Theater Center.

4. Mula Sa Buwan

Based on the play “Cyrano de Bergerac” and music and lyrics by William Manzano and Pat Valera, “MulasaBuwan”is anew musical that tells the story of 1940’s manila with the lives of young ROTC cadets/ college students who are forced to lose their innocence in the face of war. This depicts Manila before and after World War II and is inspired by the very real people who fought in the war. The Show runs from February 18 to February 26, 2017 at the Henry Lee Irwin Theatre.

5. A Game of Trolls

A game of trolls tackles the ever growing feud on the Martial Law Subject. With the burial of Marcos in The “Libingan ng mgaBayani” this production by PETA served as a protest play and discusses historical revisionism and millennial beliefs all within the musical form. This piece is not for everyone for it has a clear stand. It has a side that it is fighting for but still it sheds light on that stand and the side it is trying to win for. The play runs for a limited engagement from April 1-2 at the PETA Theater Center.

And that ladies and gentlemen is your early theatre offering for this 2017. Everything from light and fluffy to political agenda, this year certainly caters all the theatrical needs of everybody. Obviously this isn’t everything that would be coming out this 2017 so if you know of anything we missed, let us know.
