When it comes
to the environment, 2016 brought a steady stream of grim news. The previous year recorded the hottest numbers in
history. Researchers have trailed how constantly the Arctic ice continues to melt, and how it continues to warm down.
Some scientists have predicted that the sea level may continue to rise even
more than the usual. Same with the worsening air and water pollution that is
already posing threat to life here on earth.

But at the same time, 2016
still has its sunshine. According to
some experts, last year showed some
clear signs of environmental progress that we all hope to bear good fruits for
the generations to come.
1. GLOBAL CARBON EMISSIONS
APPEARED TO HAVE STOPPED.
Despite of the countries’ continued
use of fossil fuels, the increase of emissions of carbon dioxide seems to
falter. Global Carbon Project suggests that global
emissions have not changed for three years straight. Decoupling of economic growth from carbon emissions is happening. From the perspective of the
climate system, it isn’t enough for emissions to flatten; they actually
have to go down (and down and down). But this plateau is a very good start.
2. GROWING OF WORLDWIDE, WIND, AND SOLAR ENERGY.
It is a blockbuster year for the
solar industry in the U.S. according to one recent
report. The industry added a record
4,143 megawatts (or million watts) of solar-generating capacity in the
third quarter of 2016 alone, with similar growth projected in the coming
months. The
International Energy Agency said renewable energy outweighs all other sources
of new electricity in 2015, having wind, and solar being on top.
3. ONE WORLD LEADERS WITH
GLOBAL WARMING.
It was in 2015 when leaders from 200
countries came together for a mission of fighting global warming which now pose
as a worldwide concern. In the beautiful city of Paris, head of states along
with their associates crafted agreements that is aim to cut short the
greenhouse-gas emission. This serves as
an initial response to the extreme effect the world will have to bear in the
near future if the situation worsens.
Even though the treaty is prematurely implemented the leaders are still
strong-willed to take all cause to
address this environmental issue.
4. HOPE IN TECHNOLOGY RESTORATION.
Iceland is known for its histrionic
scenery with geothermal spas. But it is also eyed for possible major
advancement in developing effort to pile
carbon dioxide instead of letting it outflow into the atmosphere that triggers
global warming. Officials of Reykjavik Energy removed carbon productions from a
geothermal plant and deposited them away in the rocky ground 400 to 800 meters
deep. When inserted into basalt rock, the carbon dioxide was quickly
mineralized, or becomes rock. With this
case, the experiment is assumed to work in the actual world too.
5. THE WORLD GIVES OCEAN AN ATTENTION.
Years ago, only a portion of the
ocean was protected by island chain spanning in the Pacific northwest of
Hawaii as a monument initiated by the late President George W. Bush in 2006. It
was done to guard it from overfishing and other environmental threats. This
year, former president Barack Obama extends its miles from 1400 to 582,578.
Step by step the oceans were protected roughly 3 percent far from its goal 30-40
percent. But the scientists remains positive that there is a progress in our
efforts to protect the oceans.
This 2017, with
all the fresh starts and the continuous pursuance of our comfort life may we never forget our responsibility with
the other beings living with us. Now,
small act matters. It maybe a 1km
walk, a kind refusal to plastic
packaging, an exerted effort to turn the
electricity off when not in use or a decision to keep the trash in the right places . Option varies but always remember millennial that they ALL surely count.
