Now
that Christmas is just at arm’s length, Christmas carols start to fill the air of
almost every corner of Philippine streets and decorative “parols” light almost
every street post in Metro Manila every night.
Along
with the celebration comes a very traditional practice that is often observed
to be done by children at the time around Christmas, the “Pamamasko” as
Filipinos call it, albeit a cute tradition of giving ‘aguinaldo’ or pocket money
to one’s “inaanak,” for those who are financially well off, can be a burden to
those who didn’t have the time – or the determination – to be prepared.
If
you ask most grown-ups nowadays, they will often say ‘Wala akong pera kaya next
year na lang siguro.’ This and other financially troubling predicaments brought
on by this yearly festivity can be avoided by these few business ideas:
1.
Gift wrapping
This business idea doesn’t just have
the ability to give you a few extra silver coins in you pouch, this can also
let your creative side out. Not to mention that you can also use this to
initiate bonding with your family members or friends. With this, you can earn
shillings through an hourly rate or in the basis of workload. As a matter of
fact, even after the Christmas season, you can continue doing this for other
occasions that need gifts to be wrapped.
2.
Home decorating service
Another
way to earn money during this Yuletide season is to sell homemade or recycled
Christmas décors. There are many tutorials on Youtube and other sites to find
ideas on how to create beautiful ornaments out of cheap and affordable items.
By just being resourceful and wise this Christmas season, earning money would
be very easy.
You
can also use your talent as a Christmas tree or a home decorator! Like gift
wrapping, this needs a creative touch too. The choice of providing your service
along with the decorating materials can be grounds for raising your stock.
3.
Religious decor
What is Christmas if not a religious
festivity, eh? Anyway, this idea can never go wrong. Well off families and
personalities that like to share their blessings are looking for talents to put
up decorations that replicate the Nativity scene, St. Nicholas -- or Santa
Claus -- on a sleigh and even the wooden or sometimes concrete sculptures of
saints for Christmas. Use this to your advantage if you’re up for some hard but
high paying work.
4.
Food Business
We have to admit. Filipinos love to
eat. Especially during special occasions like the Yuletide season. Any business
minded person will not take this opportunity for granted especially those who
are near churches that don’t fail to hold the traditional ‘Simbang Gabi’ every
year. They use this to sell the two most loved food during December nights –
Bibingka and Puto Bumbong. But Simbang Gabi isn’t the only opportunity to do
this! The days before Christmas see the surge in the number of orders for a
variety of food for the feast like the Lechon, Pancit, Hamonado and fruit
cakes. Just remember not to take responsibility for the rising number of ‘high
blood pressure’ cases though.
And
there you have it! Four good ways of earning money to avoid being a ‘ninja
ninong’ and a ‘ninja ninang’ on Christmas day! Just remember, the season is all
about giving and business opportunities don’t just come during Christmas alone.
It goes through the whole year. There’s no off-season. You just have to be
ready to take risks. So trust Milton Berle when she says ‘If the opportunity
doesn’t knock, build a door.”
