5 Places to Eat When in South

Ever had the urge to get away for a while? Some place far away from papers, presentation, demands, and toxic people (oops!) But there’s one thing I can tell you, there’s no traffic on the way.

South is where the other beauty resides! From the beautiful beaches of Batangas plus its breathtaking sunset view, hot springs of Laguna, historical sites in Cavite and the wonderful view of Taal Lake when you’re in Tagaytay (plus the cozy weather, especially during Christmas season *yippee!*) down to the number of restaurants on the way. South will truly surprise you more than what you expect. So, to help you tick into another box in your notes, here’s a list of food places that you must visit when you find yourself traveling in South:

1.       Fat Melt’s Diner

Got lost on the way to the airport and found yourself in Paraňaque? We got you because we have our version of Maginhawa here in South— the B. F. Homes Paranaque! Lots of quirky and comfy restaurants are pooled around this exclusive village. Variety of cuisines can be found here, and they’ve got: Greek, Japanese, Persian, American, and of course Filipino foods!

One of the bests that I’ve tried is Fat Diner’s, a retro American Diner that offers an all-day breakfast and other budget-friendly comfort foods. Aside from that, it has that retro vibes that are too undeniable for an Instagram click! Their foods are great, especially their pancakes and waffles! They got big servings of waffle (also served with coffee or an orange juice) which is enough for two, but is more likely to finish by a single waffle-lover person. They offer typical American foods like burgers, sandwiches, salads, and milkshakes with prices ranging from P150-P250. They even have Filipino breakfast meals like Tapa, Tocino, Daing na Bangus, and Vigan Longganisa also served with garlic rice, two eggs, and coffee/orange juice!

Fat Melt’s Diner is open every day from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. It is located on the ground floor of The Pergola Mall in Aguirre Avenue, B. F. Homes, Paraňaque City.

The retro interior of this diner makes you feel like you’re ready for an American movie cameo.

2.       Buku Buku Kafe

If you like a quiet place to read, might as well try some fine dishes; you must take a visit in this café if you’re around Cavite area. Buku Buku Kafe is a haven for bookworms and artists. It is also a home for local and international inspired menu. They explored the Asian cuisine and mixed to some local dishes. Most of all, I love their Carrot Loaf (P50) together with their The Tarik Tea (P75). Their menu ranges from P100-P250.

Aside from their hip interior and yummy dishes, this café also caters rising artists. They held workshops, poetry nights, gigs, and other stuff which advocate art. Buku Buku is open every day from 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Buku Buku is opening another branch in Las Piňas (SM Southmall) on December 8, Thursday.  Its main branch is located on the Ground floor of The District Mall in Imus, Cavite.

Don’t get too alarmed because you’ll be entertained with the different crafts that are displayed on their walls. There are dreamcatchers everywhere, inspirational quotes and arts made by the locals. This café encourages customers to make their dreams happen.

Of course, their foods will also take us to our dreams. Lol, kidding. The café serves variety of American and Filipino foods, with creative names: Indie Cheezy Hashbrown Inna’ Cup (P150), baked hashbrowns mixed with cheese and minced meat in a cup; Bang-a-Dream (P180), their silog version of boneless daing na bangus served with egg, summer salad, tubasuk vinegar, and soup; and, Dreamer’s Classic Breakfast (P180) which consists of cereals in a bowl topped with frozen strawberry yoghurt, banana, strawberries and milk. They even serve a wide variety of sweets and healthy drinks like teas, smoothies and frappes. They also serve wines.

We’ve gone American, Asian and Filipino so, who will not love Italian dishes for a finale? Arabela is a popular Italian restaurant in the streets of Liliw, Laguna which is known to be the capital of shoes and flipflops in Southern Luzon.

The usual interior of an Italian café. Festive and full of cakes!

Arabela is a comfy place for lunch or dinner after a tiresome shopping of shoes. They offer pasta, pizza, steak, salad and a list of yummy pastries with prices ranging from P100-P150. Some of their dishes are also mixed with some of our local ingredients like the Kesong Puti Pizza (Large, P220).
