Recreational Activities Leading Nature’s Sufferrings

Being close to the wonders of nature gives us a breath of fresh air. Who doesn’t want to escape the toxic of living in the city even for a short period of time? No one! We are all willing to spend not only our money, but as well as our time and energy in exchange for a get away that is really worth a while. We have a lot of choices where to go to and tons of different activities to do that will give us a chance to forget the beauty of skyscrapers in the city.

Philippines is visited by different tourists coming from every part of the world to see the different tourist spot that we have in our archipelago. We know how wonderful it is to experience different sceneries in our own country. What we do not know is that we are slowly killing our nature while we are enjoying it.

Swimming is one of the best options if you’re looking for a vacation. And Boracay is a well-known beach in and out of our country. Marvelous is the right word to describe this place. From the white sand of the island down to the deep blue sea and all that’s living in it, they are all wonderful! Boracay is alive day and night, which makes it hard to keep it clean when people come after one another. All the trash of the mass tourism enjoying the beach was left on the shore and sometimes, no, most of the times the waves are carrying their junk as they go back to the sea. This year, after conducting a 5 years study about the island, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) discovered that corals cover in Boracay declined by 70.5% between the years of 1988 to 2011 due to the rise of the number of tourists visiting this place. If we only know how to leave an island as clean as it is when we arrive, then the future generation will still be able to see this paradise. Imagine how Boracay will survive if every month of the year, summer or not, it is filled with people who don’t know the words “pick up your own trash”.

Another activity that was being done in our country is flying a hot air balloon. Pampanga is one of the most visited province in our country. It is rich in history and full of must try activities. Everybody would love to see a hot air balloon floating up in the sky. For over 2 decades, the Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta was celebrated to uplift the spirit of Pampangeños after the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo. Many people from different places used to come in our country just to see this spectacular event. This activity also affects our nature due to the smoke that it releases everytime it goes up. When the propane was heated to make the hot air balloon float, this is when the pollution starts just like how cars run by fuels pollute the air. If only we are willing to contribute in tree planting activities, as much as how we are willing to fly a hot air balloon, then the affects of ballooning to our environment might lessen. Imagine how polluted the air will be in exchange for this one of kind adventure.

Playing golf doesn’t only make you feel like you have a lot of money in your pocket perhaps there’s something in this sport that makes the people play it over and over again. There’s more than a hundred golf courses in our country and the largest among them is Canlubang Golf and Country Club which is located in Canlubang, Laguna. We are aware of how much space golf courses takes up in a land, a wide space must be clear in order to put up a fairway or the green area where you can play golf. If we only prohibit building another golf course and instead just keep on improving what is already established then we can save not only a lot of space but also a wide diversity of living creatures. Imagine if more and more golf courses are built in our country, more and more inhabitants either human or an animal will keep on looking for a new place to move in.

Nothing will beat camp fires in setting up a mood for a group talk. Exploring the world of wilderness in a mountain or forest is dreamt by many. Now, more and more people choose to go hiking and camping instead of visiting amusement parks with different rides that will rather turn your stomach or make you go dizzy. Mt. Apo, the highest mountain in our country has already lost 350 hectares due to errant campfires. That is why it is proposed to banned camp fires as well as smoking due to what happen in Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park in Negros Occidental where they found out that the spark from a cigarette butt started the wildfire. If we only avoid doing trekking malpractices then we can save the forest from burning it to ashes. Imagine if careless campers leave while a camp fire is still alive, the chance of forest fire is low, but the chance is still there.

Doing recreational activities is not wrong. There’s nothing wrong in doing things that makes us feel happy for a moment and makes us carry the experience for a lifetime. What is wrong is how we neglect the things that we can do to save our environment. If our mother nature is successful in providing us her beauty let’s pay her back by providing her security to keep that beauty. We are fully informed of the simple things that we can do in order to save her, we just don’t have enough will to do it. Let’s keep in mind that the nature can survive without us because we are the one who’s putting her close to her grave.
